Miss Angola Leila Lopes Gets Spoofed

Miss Universe 2011 winner Miss Angola Leila Lopes' final question and answer gets spoofed by YouTube user TheFierceDoll. It's so funny how she makes faces when the interpreter interrupts her.

I just hope our Miss Universe representatives use interpreters as well. Miss World Philippines' decision on the use of interpreter during the international pageant, IMHO, is a great move. The candidate can speak from her heart that way.

No Truth About Oprah Winfrey's Statement Regarding Miss Universe 2011 Results

The moderator of Oprah.com has denied that the Queen of Talk, Oprah Winfrey, ever issued a statement regarding the results of the Miss Universe 2011 pageant held in Sao Paulo, Brazil on September 12th (13th in Manila).

Rumors about the alleged statement circulated on the internet a few hours after Angola's Leila Lopes won the crown. According to the statement, Oprah wasn't satisfied with the results of the pageant and that Philippines' Shamcey Supsup should have won.

The alleged statement read: “I have reservations with the results. If the only basis is the Q and A portion, after having been trimmed down to 5, Ms. Philippines deserved to win. What made her different from the rest is that she had no seconds to rethink of her answer as she had no interpreter to break the ice. The rest had their interpreters and having breaks on seconds to think about their answers. Hands down, Ms. Philippines answered straight to the point.”

To verify if the statement was true, a Filipino asked Oprah (through her website) about it. The website's moderator responded with this statement: "There is no truth to the statement. Ms. Winfrey has not made any comments of this nature. thank you for asking."

Majority have been doubtful about the authenticity of this statement, by the way, since there are no videos or the likes to support it considering that it was allegedly said over an interview with NBC News.

Shamcey Supsup, on the other hand, is happy with the results of the pageant, and happy with her 4th place finish. Who wouldn't be? She battled it out with 88 other girls from all over the world and ended up in the 4th spot!

I should say that we Pinoys shouldn't be bitter about it at all. We're 5th last year with Venus Raj, 4th this year with Shamcey Supsup... Who knows what our next year's representative would bring back home?

Lea Salonga Talks About Shamcey Supsup and the Miss Universe 2011 Pageant

Lea Salonga, who was a telecast judge of Miss Universe 2011, talks about Shamcey Supsup and the pageant itself in her recent article for Inquirer.

Lea wrote the article in journal style, relating how she finished two concerts before heading for Brazil on the same night, how the Monique Lhuillier gown and Gabriel Barredo purse that she used was transported from the Philippines, how concerts on two venues had been moved to make way for the judging stint, where that quite "controversial" question she asked Miss Angola really came from, and much more.

Below are some excerpts from Lea Salonga's Inquirer article titled "Shamcey smart, spirited, gorgeous" published earlier today at 2:39 AM:

Oprah Winfrey: "Philippines Deserved to Win"

Had Oprah Winfrey been a judge in the Miss Universe 2011 pageant, Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup could have won the title.

image

According to posts on social networking websites and forums, the Queen of Talk told NBC News that Ms. Philippines deserved to win if the only basis is the Question and Answer portion after the candidates were trimmed down to 5. According to Oprah, Shamcey answered straight to the point and without any interpreter, she had no seconds to rethink her answer.

The alleged exact words Oprah Winfrey told NBC News:

“I have reservations with the results.

We Pinoys couldn't agree more.

Shamcey Supsup picked Hollywood actress Vivica A. Fox for her question. The question was: "Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person that you love? Why or why not?" To which Shamcey answered with: "If I would have to change my religious beliefs, I would not marry the person that I love. Because the first person that I love is God, who created me. I have my faith and my principles, and this is what makes me who I am. If the person loves me, he’ll love my God, too."

Shamcey didn't even pause to think of her answer, nor did she buckle whatsoever. She answered the question from her heart and as a true God-fearing Filipina.

Many of us hoped that our representative would bring home the crown, but then finishing 3rd-runner-up brings Pinoy pride nonetheless.

In an interview with TV Patrol a while back, Shamcey Supsup was happy for what she had achieved in the pageant. And I'm sure we also would had we been on her shoes competing with 88 other beauties from around the world.

I also honestly think that Shamcey did great. She placed 4th among 89. And hey, it's a notch higher than her predecessor, Venus Raj!

Congratulations, Shamcey Supsup!

Philippines is 3rd Runner-Up; Angola Wins Miss Universe 2011

25-year-old Miss Angola Leila Lopes won the crown in the recently-concluded Miss Universe 2011 pageant held at the Credicard Hall in Sao Paolo, Brazil on September 12th. Last year's winner, Mexico's Ximena Navarrete, was there to transfer the crown.

image

Leila Lopes was a fan favorite during the Top 10, topping the fan voting system hosted by nbc.com. She got the highest score of 7.2, immediately followed by Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup with the score of 6.7.

image

Miss Universe 2011 1st runner-up went to Miss Ukraine Olesya Stefanko; 2nd runner-up was the homegirl Miss Brazil Priscila Machado; 3rd runner-up was Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup; 4th runner-up went to Miss China Luo Zilin.

International Filipina star Lea Salonga who was recently honored with the Disney Legend award was part of the telecast judging panel. She was actually the one picked by Miss Angola to give her question during the Question and Answer portion.

Aside from Lea Salonga, the other telecast judges were Hélio Castroneves, Connie Chung, Isabeli Fontana, Vivica A. Fox, Adrienne Maloof-Nassif, Farouk Shami, Italo Zanzi, and Miss Universe 2003 Amelia Vega

Philippine representative Shamcey Supsup picked Hollywood actress Vivica A.

Shamcey Supsup was the only candidate in the Top 5 who didn't use an interpreter, a fact that many of us saw was a plus on winning the title. Sadly, it was not.

Special awards were also given. The Best in National Costume went to Miss Panama Sheldry Saez; Miss Photogenic was Miss Sweden Ronnia Fornstedt; and Miss Congeniality was Miss Montenegro Nikolina Loncar.

Ms. Venezuela is Ms. Universe 2008

Ms. Philippines, Jennifer Barrientos, didn't make it even to the top 15 of the Miss Universe Pageant held at the Crown Convention Center in Nha Trang, Vietnam, Monday. The countries in the top 15 were Kosovo, Venezuela, USA, Vietnam, South Africa, Australia, Japan, Dominican Republic, Hungary, Colombia, Russia, Italy, Czech Republic, Mexico, and Spain.

The five Latin countries also made it to the top 10. The Latinas obviously dominated the pageant as Colombia, Venezuela, Dominican Republic and Mexico made it to the top 5. They were joined by Russia, the only non-Spanish contestant who made it to the final elimination round.

Ms. Venezuela, 22-year-old Dayana Mendoza, won the crown as the 57th Miss Universe. It was the 5th Miss Universe crown won by Venezuela.

First runner-up was Ms. Colombia, followed by Ms. Dominican Republic (2nd runner-up), Ms. Russia (3rd runner-up), and Ms. Mexico (4th runner-up).

Other winners include Ms. El Salvador Rebeca Moreno (Miss Congeniality) and Ms. Thailand Gavintra Photijak (Best in National Costume).
